Ocupacional”, “Masculinizadas”, “Feminizadas” y “Mujeres”.
investigación llevada a cabo.
dc.description.abstract | The presence of women in fire prevention and rescue services is scarce. The objective
of this research is to analyze occupational segregation due to gender that results in a low
representation of women in a profession traditionally understood as masculinized,
studying for this, the specific case of the fire prevention and extinction service in the
province of Seville.
In order to achieve the objective of the research, a previous bibliographic search is
carried out, through Dialnet, using the keywords: "Bombera/s", "Occupational
Segregation", "Masculinized", "Feminized" and "Women". By obtaining few results, it
has resorted to other secondary sources and to consult websites through the Google
Scholar search engine. The review of the literature found, although scarce, has allowed
to detail a theoretical framework in which the concept of segregation has been
delimited, identifying the main agents that cause it through a review of the various
theories that explain the phenomenon of occupational segregation.
In order to achieve the objectives set out in our work, on the one hand, through the
National Institute of Statistics, data have been obtained that have allowed us to analyze
the evolution of horizontal occupational segregation by gender in the occupation of
professionals who are dedicated to the safety and protection of people in the period
2011-2021 in Spain.
On the other hand, and through the Associations of Firefighters, APTB and
Serbomberas, data have been obtained that have allowed us to analyze occupational
segregation due to gender in the occupation of firefighter / to measure among all the
prevention, fire extinguishing and rescue services existing in Spain currently, and
making a comparison between the years 2017 and 2021, both nationally and regionally. An online questionnaire has been sent to 139 members of the firefighting servicefrom
the province of Seville, of which only 3 are women. The answers obtained, despite the
fact that it was sent twice, were very scarce, so a coding of the answers was carried
out.answers obtained, analyzing the most representative percentages based on the factors
of theaccess to the profession, thegender stereotypes, thevisibility, thediscrimination
andthefemale presence in the future.Nevertheless, thoughthey have not been
ablestatistically significant differences by sex, due to the scarce presence of women and
the scarcity of responses to the questionnaire sent, the responses given by the three
female firefighters have been compared in relation to the factors analyzed and with the
responses given by themale firefighters. Both the statistical data analyzed and the results
obtained from the questionnaires sent constitute the empirical part of the research
carried out.
An online questionnaire has been sent to 139 members of the firefighting service of the
province of Seville, of which only 3 are women. The responses obtained, despite the
fact that it was sent twice, were very scarce, for which was carried out a codification of
the answers obtained, analyzing the most representative percentages based on the
factors of access to the profession, gender stereotypes, visibility, discrimination and
female presence in the future. However, although it has not been possible to capture
statistically significant differences by sex, due to the low presence of women and the
scarcity in the answers to the questionnaire sent, the answers given by the three women
firefighters in relation to the factors analyzed and with the answers given by the male
firefighters have been compared. Both the statistical data analyzed and the results
obtained from the questionnaires sent constitute the empirical part of the research
carried out.
After analyzing the data obtained from the different sources consulted, it is concluded
that both the profession of firefighter, as well as that of professionals who are dedicated
to protection and security services, has been and continues to be a very segregated
profession, which has not also had a great evolution in terms of female presence, still
considering it a masculinized profession. From the most representative percentages extracted from the analysis carried out to the
answers given by the firefighter personnel of the firefighting service of the province of
Seville, we conclude that although the choice of this profession remains purely
vocational, there are still barriers, both in access to the profession, and in the
permanence and promotion in the service. These barriers make women invisible,
discriminate against them as a result of gender stereotypes, and contribute to their
presence being scarce, and ultimately to the continued phenomenon of occupational
segregation by gender.
To finish the work, and after knowing first-hand the situation of a fire service such as
that of the province of Seville, a series of improvements are proposed aimed at
achieving a more equal treatment that contributes to the elimination of the barriers that
still exist when choosing this profession by women, and that they must come hand in
hand with the opening of future lines of research that are responsible for giving
visibility to this group. | es |
