Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) collect and concentrate the solar irra-diation to generate electricity through the photovoltaic effect. LSCs haveattracted attention due to their concentration factors, their ability to providewavelength-to-bandgap matched photons, and because of their high func-tionality under both diffuse and direct illumination. This paper assessesluminescent solar concentrators, in which the inclusion of a tunable photo-luminescence optical layer is analyzed. Three main goals are achieved. Firstof all, we achieved for the first time an optical window based on a randomlyoriented six-dye system that exchanges energy sequentially between them(Förster resonance energy transfer [FRET]), which is interesting from a sci-entific point of view. Second, the present work achieved a broad absorptionspectrum by combining six dyes, whichis interesting from a practical pointof view. Third, although we can achieve a similar broad absorption with areduced number of dyes, this strategy allows to tune both the absorption ofthe optical window and the emission with high selectivity (by removingdyes) in order to match the emissionof the luminescent system to thebandgap of the PV technology used in the LSC, whose efficiency is increasedby 26.9% with respect to the reference prototype. |
