The present work aims to offer a study of the aesthetic and sensory experience of the Day of the Dead from its pre-Hispanic origins to modern Mexico. Through the examination of the different spiritual and religious views that have shaped the country's history, as well as the political and identity crises in Mexico, a re-reading of its history and the origins of the Day of the Dead tradition is undertaken. To achieve this objective, the work of anthropologist Claudio Lomnitz, philosopher Octavio Paz, writer Juan Rulfo, and artist Diego Rivera was studied in order to understand the creation of the imagery surrounding death that permeates Mexican culture. This work aspires to conduct an autopsy on the concept of death in Mexico, to recognize the signifiers of its traditional representation, and to characterize it as an aesthetic and sensory experience that is felt both physically and metaphysically. The latter aspect involves memory, the transcendence of the soul, and the acceptance of the finitude of life. Behind each of the elements that make up the celebration of the Day of the Dead, there exists a myth, and this work attempts to expose and demonstrate how human expression is layered with history and questions that it seeks to address through art. |
