La Catedral Sumergida. Adufe, abastecimiento de aguas a Sevilla

Abstract

Sevilla, a finales del S.XIX, contaba con un sistema de abastecimiento de agua obsoleto e insuficiente. La Compañía Inglesa The Seville Water Works Company Limited fue la encargada de modernizar la gestión del abastecimiento del agua y llevar a la ciudad a una nueva etapa. Una de las intervenciones más relevantes de esta etapa fue la construcción de la Estación de Bombeo de Adufe Bajo, construida en 1885, que suministraba agua mediante bombeo a Adufe Alto, donde se ubica el aljibe objeto de este trabajo. Esta estación se encuentra ubicada en un lugar estratégico por su cercanía a los manantiales de Alcalá de Guadaíra, lo cual facilitaba el bombeo del agua desde Adufe Bajo hasta el Aljibe de Adufe Alto. Durante muchos años, esta joya arquitectónica estuvo oculta, y gracias a una casual intervención en la que fue preciso vaciar todo el agua del aljibe, este magnífico depósito al que me referiré como una Catedral Sumergida, quedó descubierto brindándonos la posibilidad de volver a descubrir esta obra, que se ha mantenido en perfecto estado de conservación, formada por grandes arcos que la dotan de una belleza admirable. Su conocimiento y puesta en valor nos permite dejar palpable que estamos ante elementos de nuestro Patrimonio Cultural que tenemos la obligación de mantener y proteger.

Seville, at the end of the 19th century, had an obsolete and insufficient water supply system. The English Company The Seville Water Works Company Limited was in charge of modernizing the management of the water supply and taking the city to a new stage. One of the most relevant interventions of this stage was the construction of the Adufe Bajo Pumping Station, built in 1885, which supplied water by pumping to Adufe Alto, where the cistern object of this work is located. This station is located in a strategic place due to its proximity to the Alcalá de Guadaíra springs, which facilitated the pumping of water from Adufe Bajo to the Adufe Alto cistern. For many years, this architectural jewel was hidden, and thanks to a casual intervention in which it was necessary to empty all the water from the cistern, this magnificent water tank that I will refer to as a Submerged Cathedral, was discovered giving us the possibility of returning to discover this work, which has been kept in a perfect state of conservation, formed by large arches that give it an admirable beauty. Their knowledge and enhancement allows us to make it clear that we are facing elements of our Cultural Heritage that we have the obligation to maintain and protect.
