dc.description.abstract | The following project addresses the 3D modeling and virtual recreation of a twin-cylinder steam
engine for a paddle boat using CATIA V5 software. Steam engines began to spread at the
end of the 18th century, being the means of transport the main beneficiaries of the continuous
improvements that began to take place. Thus, ships ceased to depend on winds and tides and began
to be moved by thermal engines, being able to make longer routes and with greater merchandise.
Particularly, paddle boats were the first vessels to be propelled by steam engines, being considered
models of great beauty and still preserved for tourist activities in the most iconic rivers around the
world.
The developed model was proposed in an article in the magazine Model Engineer in 1955 by Edgar
T. Westbury. That article, under the title Power by paddles, proposed the option of installing a steam
engine adapted to the times for a paddle boat for training purposes. Although in the end it was
not executed, we now intend to recover the model initially proposed by Westbury, carrying out
its modeling and virtual recreation and carrying out the general guidelines of how it would be its
manufacturing and assembly process.
The characteristics of the engine will be detailed as a result of the bibliographic review carried
out and the most representative CATIA V5 modules will be used to carry out the modeling and
assembly of the parts first, and then the simulation of the manufacturing process and the virtual
recreation of the operating mechanism. | es |
