Fábrica de sombreros Fernández y Roche: antropología arquitectónica

Abstract

Los barrios de San Luis y San Julián en Sevilla se han caracterizado por una convulsa historia de lucha social, revoluciones, actividad obrera y, más recientemente, por la actividad artesana y cultural. Los habitantes de estos barrios han sido testigos de transformaciones positivas y negativas de su entorno urbano, organizando respuestas a estos cambios, que pueden reflejarse en su alta acción reivindicativa, destacando la búsqueda de lugares para la artesanía y la cultura, que enriquecieran la vida social de los barrios. La antigua Fábrica de Sombreros Fernández y Roche, situada en este entorno, aglutina estas características en un sólo edificio. Destacable en el skyline urbano del centro de Sevilla por su esbelta chimenea, esta fábrica ha sido testigo de la evolución industrial de la ciudad desde principios del siglo XIX y es un referente de patrimonio industrial en Andalucía. Además, ha sido y es (en su nueva ubicación) líder en la industria sombrerera a nivel mundial. La fábrica ha sido el punto de encuentro de numerosas luchas sociales que han culminado en su situación actual, siendo un referente de autogestión, al estar habitada por diversos artesanos y asociaciones. Estas características la convierten en un edificio representativo del espíritu reivindicativo del barrio y su lucha contra los agentes especulativos. Por ello, el objetivo de este trabajo es un análisis de esta fábrica en su registro más social y antropológico dentro de los límites de la arquitectura. Tratando de descifrar cómo un inmueble con una finalidad industrial ha sido gradualmente modificado según las necesidades de los inquilinos que lo han habitado, convirtiéndose, actualmente, en un lugar de referencia para la actividad artesanal del barrio, pero con una incertidumbre en cuanto a su futuro. Marcado este, por un lado, por su potencial arquitectónico y social, y por otro lado, por la amenaza de la especulación y la gentrificación de su entorno urbano.

The neighborhoods of San Luis and San Julián in Seville have been characterized by a convulsive history of social struggle, revolutions, labor activity and, more recently, artisan and cultural activity. The inhabitants of these neighborhoods have witnessed positive and negative transformations of their urban environment, organizing responses to these changes, which can be reflected in their high demand action, highlighting the search for places for crafts and culture, which enriched social life of the neighborhoods. The old Fernández y Roche Hat Factory, located in this area, brings together these characteristics in a single building. Notable in the urban skyline of the center of Seville for its slender chimney, this factory has witnessed the industrial evolution of the city since the beginning of the 19th century and is a benchmark for industrial heritage in Andalusia. In addition, it has been and is (in its new location) a leader in the hat industry worldwide. The factory has been the meeting point of numerous social struggles that have culminated in its current situation, being a benchmark for self-management, as it is inhabited by various artisans and associations. These characteristics make it a representative building of the protest spirit of the neighborhood and its fight against speculative agents. Therefore, the objective of this work is an analysis of this factory in its most social and anthropological register within the limits of architecture. Trying to decipher how a building with an industrial purpose has been gradually modified according to the needs of the tenants who have inhabited it, currently becoming a reference place for the artisan activity of the neighborhood, but with uncertainty as to its future. This is marked, on the one hand, by its architectural and social potential, and on the other hand, by the threat of speculation and the gentrification of its urban environment.
