La muchedumbre y su arquitectura

Abstract

El presente texto se interroga sobre la posibilidad de un género arquitectónico asociado a las muchedumbres. Ese género aglutinaría tipos edificatorios que cubren las diferentes funciones propias de las masas humanas cuando estas se presentan formando una unidad más o menos compacta, tanto en diferentes estados estáticos como en movimiento. Surge una problemática derivada del espacio en el que la muchedumbre se define. Las ciencias que se han ocupado de analizar las masas humanas han descuidado la componente espacial del fenómeno de las multitudes. Toda una psicología se ha puesto en pie para estudiar la relación de las masas humanas con los agentes de poder. Una arquitectura reconocible y bien estudiada es producida desde la acción de fuerzas de poder de carácter totalitario, pero estas familias de edificios, que ya son identificables en las culturas arquitectónicas antiguas, solo conforman un capítulo dentro de un corpus aún más extenso. Siendo la modernidad “la era de las multitudes”, cierta arquitectura moderna vendría a añadirse a esos modelos. Una arquitectura para las masas en la que estas no fuesen sometidas a un tratamiento meramente instrumental.

This paper asks about the possibility of an architectural genre associated with crowds. That genre would agglutinate building types serving the functions human masses demand when they are presented as a compact unit, both in static states and in movement. A problem arises derived from what is the space in which the crowd defines itself. Sciences concerned with the analysis of human masses have neglected the spatial component of the phenomenon of crowds. A whole Psychology has been built to study the relationship between the human masses and the agents of power. A recognizable and wellstudied architecture is produced from the action of totalitarian powe. Although these families of buildings, already present in ancient architectural cultures, are only one chapter in an even more extensive corpus. Being modernity “the age of the crowds”, there are some buildings of modern architecture that join those families. Those buildings in which the crowd was not subjected to a merely instrumental treatment.
