La influencia de la estética de Edmund Burke en la génesis y desarrollo de la narrativa gótica del XVIII

Abstract

En el presente trabajo se analiza el alcance de la influencia de Edmund Burke sobre los novelistas góticos ingleses de la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII y las primeras décadas del XIX. La estructura de dicho análisis es la siguiente: En el primer apartado se establece cuáles son las características principales de la novela gótica; en el segundo, se estudia el ambiente cultural, filosófico y literario de la Inglaterra del siglo XVIII; en el tercero, se detallan y analizan los escritos al respecto de lo sublime y del terror que habían sido publicados con anterioridad a la Enquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and the Beautiful de Burke; en el cuarto se aborda este ensayo, atendiendo principalmente a los aspectos del mismo que mayor presencia parecen tener dentro de las novelas góticas, así como a la originalidad de sus postulados; en el quinto se detallan y analizan algunos de los más destacados ensayos sobre el terror en la literatura que son publicados, con posterioridad a la Enquiry, en el último tercio del siglo XVIII; en el sexto y último apartado se abordan algunos de los principales representantes de la novela gótica (Horace Walpole, Ann Radcliffe, Mathew Lewis, William Godwin y Mary Shelley) atendiendo tanto a la presencia de Burke en sus novelas como al vínculo existente entre Burke y el autor. La conclusión obtenida es que, si bien Burke tuvo una repercusión considerable entre la mayoría de estos autores, el alcance de dicha influencia es más limitado de lo que en ocasiones se ha pensado.

In this paper it is analyzed the extent of Edmund Burke's influence on English Gothic novelists of the second half of the eighteenth century and the first decades of the nineteenth century. The structure of this document goes as follows: In the first section the basic features of the Gothic novel is established; in the second section, the cultural, philosophical and literary environment of England in the eighteenth century is studied; in the third section, the writings concerning the sublime and the terror that had been published before Burke's “Enquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and the Beautiful” are detailed and analysed; in the fourth section, this essay is covered, paying special attention to its aspects that seem to have a greater presence in Gothic novels, as well as to the originality of its postulates; in the fifth section, some of the most outstanding essays on terror in literature that are published, after the Inquiry, in the last third of the 18th century are detailed and analysed; in the sixth and final section, some of the main representative authors of the Gothic novel (Horace Walpole, Ann Radcliffe, Mathew Lewis, William Godwin and Mary Shelley) are covered, taking into account both the presence of Burke in their novels and the link between Burke and each author. The conclusion obtained is that, although Burke had a considerable impact among most of these authors, the scope of said influence is more limited than has sometimes been thought.
