Études théoriques et empiriques sur la métaphore dans l’image : une revue de la littérature

Abstract

La métaphore est une figure de style par laquelle on transfère la signification d’un terme à celle d’un autre terme. Le plus souvent verbale, la métaphore se trouve aussi présentée dans des images. Cet article propose une synthèse des travaux théoriques et expérimentaux sur la métaphore picturale. Elle comprend trois parties : la première partie porte sur la définition de la métaphore. La deuxième concerne la typologie de la métaphore picturale, sa composition et ses usages. Enfin, la troisième partie aborde la question de sa compréhension en examinant deux approches non exclusives : une approche basée sur le transfert de propriétés et une approche basée sur le contexte des objets représentés dans l’image. La discussion met l’accent sur les processus cognitifs impliqués dans la compréhension de la métaphore picturale et sur le passage de relations picturales à des relations de nature sémantique.

Metaphor is a figure of style in which the meaning of a term is transferred to that of another term. Most often verbal, the metaphor is also depicted in images. This article proposes a synthesis of theoretical and experimental works on the pictorial metaphor. It consists of three parts : the first part is about the definition of the metaphor. The second concerns the typology of the pictorial metaphor, its composition and its uses. Finally, the third axis addresses the question of its comprehension by examining two non-exclusive approaches : an approach based on the transfer of properties and a context-based approach of the objects depicted in the image. The discussion is on the vivid questions about the distinction between cognitive processes involved in the understanding of the metaphor according to its pictorial nature and the transition from pictorial relationships to relations of a semantic nature.
