La Alcazaba de Badajoz: de recinto palaciego a espacio militar

Abstract

Situada sobre el cerro de la Muela, la Alcazaba de Badajoz es una de las mejores muestras de recinto defensivo islámico de España. Este enclave, protegido en altura y abrigado por los ríos Rivilla y Guadiana, ha hecho que la ciudad, desde su fundación en el siglo IX, haya sido protagonista de un sinfín de guerras por el control de la frontera. Estos hechos han producido la conjunción de varios sistemas defensivos que han ido superponiéndose a lo largo de la historia En la ciudad encontraremos un primitivo recinto defensivo de época almohade, consistente en altos muros que rodean el cerro, puertas en recodo, torres albarranas y demás elementos que posteriormente fueron reforzados con un moderno sistema de abaluartamiento de estilo Vauban. El estudio que aquí se presenta da respuesta a la evolución del recinto islámico, buscando las claves que han marcado el desarrollo del conjunto. Se mostrará la progresiva transformación de los usos en el interior del recinto, haciendo hincapié en la transición entre los siglos XIV y XIX cuando siendo el recinto sitio de viviendas nobiliarias se convierte en lugar de acuartelamiento de tropas y almacenamiento de artillería. El trabajo mostrará de manera transversal la historia y la arquitectura del lugar, siguiendo la planimetría histórica existente y el legado documental recogido. Intentando acercar al lector al conocimiento de la zona y su historia.

Located on the hill of La Muela, the Alcazaba of Badajoz is one of the best examples of an Islamic defensive enclosure in Spain. This enclave, protected by it’s height and surrounded by the rivers Rivilla and Guadiana, has meant that the city, since its foundation in the 9th century, has been involved in countless wars over control of the border. These events have led to the conjunction of several defensive systems that have been overlapped over time. In the city we fi nd a primitive defensive enclosure from the Almohad period, consisting of high walls that surround the hill, bent gates, watchtowers and other elements that were later reinforced with a modern Vauban-style defensive system. The study presented here provides a response to the evolution of the Islamic enclosure, searching for the key components that have marked the development of the site. It will show the progressive transformation of the uses inside the enclosure, with emphasis on the transition between the 14th and 19th centuries, when the enclosure became a place for the barracking of troops and the storage of artillery. The work will show the history and architecture of the site in a transversal manner, following the existing historical plans and the collected documentary legacy, aiming to provide the reader with familiarity of the area and its history.
