dc.description.abstract | Over the past few decades, art and architecture have experienced a number
of radical and reciprocal exchanges. It is in the exhibition area, in
its strategies and practices, in one of the fields in which the
consequences of these contaminations and exchanges have been
experienced. Whereas artists have simulated “architectural” environments
such as design plans and mock-ups, structures and pavilions build outside
the artistic institutions or they have participated in urban and public
spaces, where architects have used “art” strategies taking into account
by art institutions in exhibitions, biennials and art events. Indeed,
there are some architects that have envisioned the exhibition area and
some artists that have corrupted it and made it reel. Simultaneously,
art galleries and museums have combined both activities in a hybrid
interdisciplinary field, playing with the conditional differences inside
and outside of them. We find in these exchange strategies and practices
some concrete examples or “cases” of these bidirectional transactions:
on the one hand, artists who adopt architectural resources, since they
are architects; on the other hand, architects who adopt art strategies,
since they are artists.
Therefore, this thesis presents a study in depth of examples from recent
history in which it is shown this transposition of resources and
strategies from architecture to art and vice versa. Among them, we will
consider more interesting the ones that redefine the categories that
make us understand art and architecture. This historical, but also
theoretical, review about the art- architecture exchange will be
specifically used to analyse Gerardo Delgado and José Ramón Sierra’s,
both coetaneous architects and artists, contributions to this field.
For this purpose, we will undertake an in-depth study and we will prove
its particular nature. Regarding Delgado, we will tackle the subject
through his work that manipulates and transforms the space (1968), his
fictional recreations (1970), the discovery of San Hermenegildo as an
exhibition area (1970), fabric installation (1972-1975), a new way of
intervention in a space based on a text (1987) and the incidental
exhibition area, his house (1987-2004). As for Sierra, the topic will
be addressed through his period in charge of the Museo de Arte
Contemporáneo de Sevilla as head of architecture and staging (1970-
1974), the Centro de Arte M-11 project (1973-1974), the exhibition areas
related to social movement organized from COAAOB by CEYS (1975-1976) and
the Galería Juana de Aizpuru in Zaragoza Street (1986-1987). | es |
