Manifestaciones orales de la COVID-19

Abstract

El virus de nueva aparición SARS-CoV-2 causante de una pandemia mundial es el responsable de la conocida enfermedad COVID-19. Se ha estudiado ampliamente el cuadro clínico de esta enfermedad y sus repercusiones a nivel sistémico, pero se desconoce las repercusiones que puede tener a nivel oral. El objetivo del presente trabajo es estudiar las manifestaciones orales que pueden ser provocadas por la COVID-19. Este trabajo es una revisión bibliográfica de la literatura publicada sobre este tema. Tras una búsqueda en diferentes bases de datos, seleccionamos 20 artículos. Existe una alta prevalencia de manifestaciones orales en pacientes COVID entre las que destacan lesiones ulcerosas y vesiculoampollosas, alteración del gusto, xerostomía y ectasia de las glándulas salivales, cándida e infecciones oportunistas, halitosis e incluso pigmentación de las encías. No se tiene clara la etiología, se piensa que pueden estar causadas por la acción directa de la replicación del virus en la mucosa, indirectamente por el estrés y ansiedad sufridos por el paciente durante el tiempo de convalecencia o secundarias a la medicación administrada durante el curso de la enfermedad. No obstante, se precisan más estudios e investigación para poder afirmar que el SARS-CoV-2 sea el causante directo de estas lesiones y se puedan considerar genuinas de la enfermedad.

The newly emerging virus SARS-CoV-2 causing a global pandemic is responsible for the well-known COVID-19 disease. The clinical picture of this disease and its repercussions at the systemic level have been extensively studied, but the repercussions that it may have at the oral area are unknown. The objective of this work is to study the oral manifestations that can be caused by COVID-19. This work is a bibliographic review of the published literature on this topic. After a search in different databases, we selected 20 articles. There is a high prevalence of oral manifestations in COVID patients, including ulcerative and vesiculobullous lesions, taste alteration, xerostomia and salivary glands ectasia, candida and opportunistic infections, halitosis and even gum pigmentation. The etiology is not clear, it is thought that they may be caused by the direct action of the replication of the virus in the mucosa, indirectly by the stress and anxiety suffered by the patient during the time of convalescence or secondary to the medication administered during the disease. However, more studies and research are required to be able to affirm that SARS-CoV-2 is the direct cause of these lesions and that they can be considered genuine of the disease.
