De Cantón a Sevilla: la transmisión cultural del mantón de Manila

Abstract

Este estudio pretende demostrar que el Mantón de Manila en específico y la cultura española en general, no sólo se basa en influencias europeas y árabes, sino que también el componente chino es muy importante. El mantón de Manila pertenece principalmente al Bordado Yue, el cual es un tipo de bordado que se teje en Cantón y que está basada la estética del mantón.

Otros estudios han demostrado que el mantón de Manila no tiene como origen los talleres que se establecieron en España y en concreto en Andalucía en su mayor parte, sino que el mantón de Manila se importaba desde Filipinas, que venía a través del Galeón de Manila. Pero, que, a su vez, estos mantones no se tejían en Manila, sino que se fabricaban en Cantón y se transportaba hasta Manila, para luego ser llevado a Sevilla.

Los primeros mantones que se comerciaban poseían simbología principalmente cantonesa. Los comerciantes se establecieron en Cantón, primero comprando los bordados que fabricaban los cantoneses y luego dando órdenes a las fábricas para que se utilizaran patrones que incluían elementos españoles para su mayor aceptación. Esto supone una nueva visión del mantón de Manila y de la cultura española en general.

This research aims to demonstrate that the Manila shawl specifically, and the Spanish culture in general, is not only based on European and Arab influences, but also the Chinese component is very important. The Manila shawl belongs mainly to the Yue Embroidery, which is a type of embroidery that is woven in Canton and based on the shawl aesthetic.

Other studies have shown that the Manila shawl does not originate from the workshops that were established in Spain, and in Andalusia for the most part, but that the Manila shawl was imported from the Philippines, which came through the Manila Galleon. But, at the same time, these shawls were not woven in Manila, but were manufactured in Canton and transported to Manila, and transported to Seville.

The first shawls that were traded had mainly Cantonese symbology. The European merchants settled in Canton, first buying the embroideries that the Cantonese manufactured, and then giving orders to the factories to use patterns that include Spanish elements for greater acceptance. This supposes a new vision of the Manila shawl, and of the Spanish culture in general.
