Abstract

Couronnement de la littérature botanique et pharmacologique arabe, le Kitāb al-Gami' fut composé par Ibn al-Baytār, originaire de Malaga et mort en 1248. Conservé dans plus de 80 manuscrits (dont la liste est donnée en annexe), ce dictionnaire alphabétique des aliments et des médicaments d'origine végétale, animale et minérale compile, de manière méthodique et critique, des sources grecques, persanes et arabes, tout en intégrant la riche expérience pratique de l'auteur, qui parcourut tout le monde musulman et y a herborisé en compagnie de disciples. La richesse du matériau rassemblé par Ibn al-Baytār se révèle notamment dans les parties initiales de ses notices, qui sont ici longuement analysées.

Ibn al-Baytār and his Contributions to Botany and Pharmacology in the Kitāb al-Gami' - The crowning achievement of Arab botanical and pharmacological literature, the Kitāb al-Gami' was composed by Ibn al-Baytār, a native of Malaga who died in 1248. Conserved in over 80 manuscripts (listed here in the annex), this alphabetical dictionary of foods and medicines of vegetable, mineral or animal origin, compiles, in a methodical and critical manner, Greek, Persian and Arab sources, and at the same time integrates the author's wealth of practical experience. He travelled the entire Moslem world and gathered herbs in the company of his followers. The wealth of material assembled by Ibn al-Baytâr is revealed notably in the initial parts of his entries, which are analyzed here at length.
