El 16 de agosto de 1906 la ciudad chilena de Valparaíso padeció un terremoto que tuvo como consecuencia el fallecimiento de muchos de sus habitantes y la ruina de sus viviendas; debido al uso generalizado de madera en la construcción de las casas se produjo un gran incendio que incrementó los daños provocados por el seísmo. En esta investigación se analiza la gestión del desastre, especialmente el papel que tuvieron los servicios sanitarios por medio de distintos informes que se generaron en la época de estudio. Destaca también la labor desempeñada por funcionarios, militares marinos y particulares que se unieron para sobrellevar la organización de una catástrofe de estas magnitudes. Las medidas represivas aceptadas en aquellos tiempos nos demuestran el caos que se ocasiona en momentos de una crisis de subsistencia. On August 16, 1906, the Chilean city of Valparaíso suffered an earthquake that resulted in the death of many of its inhabitants and the ruin of their homes;due to the widespread use of wood in the construction of the houses, a large fire broke out that increased the damage caused by the earthquake.In this research, disaster management is analyzed, especially the role of health services through different reports that were generated at the time of study.Also noteworthy is the organization led by civil servants, soldiers, and individuals who came together to cope with a catastrophe of this magnitude. The repressive measures accepted in those times show us the chaos that occurs in moments of a subsistence crisis. |
