El convento en una nueva sociedad: transformaciones y nuevos usos: el caso de los conventos sevillanos

Abstract

En la actualidad, la ausencia vocacional está marcando el ritmo religioso y la configuración de ciudades que un día fueron importantes núcleos conventuales, dando origen a transformaciones y adaptaciones arquitectónicas, generalmente centradas en usos de nueva funcionalidad y orientadas a responder a una creciente demanda turística. Las dificultades económicas y la falta de vocaciones jóvenes que vayan renovando las que van desapareciendo por cuestiones naturales han precipitado el cierre de numerosas edificaciones conventuales y el abandono de las mismas, propiciando el surgimiento de nuevos usos. El fuerte valor de uso con que cuentan algunas de estas tipologías arquitectónicas o espaciales, entre ellas sus huertas, jardines, claustros, patios y compases, en la mayoría de ocasiones, no posibilita la implantación de nuevos usos sin desvirtuar sus valores patrimoniales. Pudiendo ello desembocar en importantes pérdidas que, sin duda, resultan irreparables. En este artículo pondremos en evidencia lo acontecido en el caso sevillano, preguntándonos si las actuaciones llevadas a cabo han significado una puesta en valor de sus elementos espaciales, significando un hito en la evolución de la edificación, o si por el contrario han implicado una merma en el entendimiento de sus valores patrimoniales, suponiendo, por tanto, un peligro en la preservación de la espacialidad del bien.

Nowadays, the religious rhythm and the layout of the conventual cities are characterized by the absence of vocations. This is causing transformations and structural adaptations, in cities with a deep conventual tradition. These changes are focused on new functionality uses aimed at responding to a growing tourist demand. The economic difficulties and the lack of young vocations that could renew those who are disappearing for natural reasons, have triggered the closure of several convent buildings. Indeed, these have caused their abandonment by the religious communities. This has favoured the appearance of new uses. The high use value of some of these architectural or spatial typologies, among them their orchards, gardens, cloisters, yards and entrance courts, in most cases, does not allow new uses without affecting their heritage values. Being able to end in important losses that they turn out to be undoubtedly irreparable. Through this article, we will highlight what happened in the Sevillian case, enhancing the value of their spatial elements, becoming a milestone in the evolution of the building or if on the contrary, they have negatively affected their heritage values, and supposing, therefore, a danger in the preservation of the spatial qualities of the cultural property.
