Charles Clifford y las reproducciones fotográficas de obras pictóricas

Abstract

Este artículo se ocupa de analizar, desde las estrategias y los intereses de las relaciones específicas que mantuvieron la fotografía y la pintura en la España de mediados del siglo XIX, las reproducciones de obras artísticas tomadas por Charles Clifford a lo largo de su trayectoria profesional en nuestro país, aportando nuevos datos sobre su estancia en Sevilla en la primavera de 1854. De las comparaciones realizadas por el investigador entre las reproducciones y los cuadros que, según el fotógrafo, le sirvieron de modelo —con especial atención a las pinturas atribuidas a Murillo— se demuestra que Clifford no reprodujo las obras originales sino unas réplicas o interpretaciones realizadas por copistas

This article investigates, from the interests and strategies of the specific relationships between photography and painting in the mid-nineteenth century in Spain, the photographic reproductions of artistic works taken by Charles Clifford during his professional career in our country, and offers new information about his stay in Seville in the spring of 1854. As a result of a comparative study conducted by the researcher of the reproductions and the paintings, which the photographer said he used as models, with special attention given to those of Murillo, it is concluded that Clifford did not photograph the original works, rather replicas of these made by copyists
