dc.description.abstract | In the present work, a technical feasibility study is performed on the supercritical oxidation (SCO) of
wastewater using a multizone stationary model. In this model, an optimization of the operating conditions of
the process will be carried out, seeking a balance between the conversion of organic matter of the reaction and
the energy use of the process surpluses.
In the first place, the characteristics of supercritical water have been studied and it has been observed that
thanks to its unique properties it has great potential as a medium to carry out different types of reactions. In the
supercritical state, water is capable of dissolving different gases such as O2, H2 and CO2 as well as organic
compounds such as hydrocarbons, forming a single phase. Furthermore, due to the value of the ionic product
of water in the supercritical state, free radical reactions are favoured. As a result of studying these properties,
the main parameters that affect the process were identified.
Afterwards, the published literature of the state of the art of the technology of the supercritical oxidation of
wastewater was reviewed. In this evaluation, the characteristics of the SCO of wastewater technology, the
different types of reactors that exist in the market and the most common energy utilisation methods were
examined.
After analysing the current state of technology, the model of a real SCO plant was developed. The first thing
that was programmed was the reactor with its governing equations, chemical kinetics of the reaction and the
heat losses of the equipment. A target of destruction of the organic matter was then set, and the needed length
of reactor to achieve it was calculated. Necessary corrections were made till accurate results were obtained
before going on to test if the process was thermally self-sustaining. Heat recovery units were used for this task
to preheat the load with the reactor effluent heat. Once it was verified that the process could indeed be
thermally self-sufficient due to the fact that the oxidation reaction is exothermic, a series of studies were
conducted to analyse how the modification of certain operating conditions affected the process.
Last but not least, different alternatives were examined to take advantage of the thermal energy of the effluent.
Fixing the same conditions for all the methods, each of the routes of both thermal energy generation and
electrical energy generation were studied qualitatively and quantitatively, and conclusions were drawn about
which methods are more suitable to utilise the energy of the effluent given the low temperature of the heat
source. It was not possible to supply the electricity consumption of the installation, however, it has not been
ruled out that it is possible given other operating conditions. | es |
