Rehabilitación estructural de la Arquitectura Moderna: la Casa de la Cascada

Abstract

El presente trabajo pretende poner de manifiesto la necesidad de rehabilitación de la Arquitectura del Movimiento Moderno para su preservación. Asociado al irremediable paso del tiempo aparece el deterioro de la arquitectura, siendo el más preocupante el de su estructura, pues de ella depende su perdurabilidad. Por otro lado, el carácter experimental de la arquitectura de este período es, en muchos casos, el origen de la presencia de patologías estructurales. Con el fin de lograr la perpetuación de la Arquitectura Moderna resulta imprescindible conocer las circunstancias en las que nace, para comprender sus características y, de este modo, poder encontrar el método de intervención que más se adecúe, siempre teniendo presente la necesidad de mantener su esencia. Se elige una obra paradigmática cuyo estudio exhaustivo comprenderá el grueso del desarrollo del trabajo, permitiendo una profundidad en su análisis que posibilite hacerse una idea del potencial dela Arquitectura Moderna y de la necesidad de su preservación, especialmente en el caso de aquella con carácter patrimonial. Esta obra, clave en la arquitectura del s. XX, es la Casa de la Cascada de Frank Lloyd Wright. Se expone, de forma unificada, información que se encontraba dispersa, de modo que al aunarse en un único documento se facilita la comprensión de las circunstancias que han dado lugar a la Casa de la Cascada tal y como la conocemos: el proyecto, la ejecución, la vida útil, la rehabilitación estructural y su situación actual. Finalmente, se obtienen unas conclusiones que versarán sobre los entresijos de la intervención estructural, mostrando que su carácter no es meramente arquitectónico, además de tratar posibles alternativas a la intervención estudiada y plantear una serie de recomendaciones sobre pautas de intervención.

The present work aims to highlight the need for the rehabilitation of Modern Movement Architecture for its preservation. Associated with the inevitable passage of time, the deterioration of architecture appears, the most worrying being that of its structure, since its durability depends on it. On the other hand, the experimental character of the architecture of this period is, in many cases, the origin of the presence of structural pathologies. In order to achieve the perpetuation of Modern Architecture, it is essential to know the circumstances in which it was born, to understand its characteristics and, in this way, to be able to find the most appropriate intervention method, always keeping in mind the need to maintain its essence. A paradigmatic work is chosen whose exhaustive study will comprise the bulk of the development of the work, allowing a depth in its analysis that makes it possible to get an idea of the potential of Modern Architecture and the need for its preservation, especially in the case of that with a patrimonial nature. This key work in 20th century architecture is Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater. Information that was scattered is exposed, in a unified way, so that when combined in a single document, the understanding of the circumstances that have given rise to the Fallingwater as we know it is facilitated: the project, the execution, the useful life, the structural rehabilitation and its current situation. Finally, some conclusions are obtained that will deal with the ins and outs of structural intervention, showing that its character is not merely architectural, in addition to dealing with possible alternatives to the intervention studied and proposing a series of recommendations on intervention guidelines.
