dc.description.abstract | Our planet is suffering from depletion of fossil resources and high environmental pollution due
to their use. The time to act is not in the near future, the time to act is now. Every time more
technological resources are available to be able to face this situation, and efforts should be made
to gradually introduce new technologies that provide the energy needed to supply the population
without the need for high pollution or environmental impact.
One of the technologies booming in recent years is hydrogen technology. This chemical element
cannot be considered an energy source, but an energy vector through which it can be stored,
transported and then produce zero emissions energy.
Although at present most hydrogen is obtained from natural gas refurbishment, there is the
possibility of using electrolysis so that a certain current or quantity of water through the
application of an electric current can be dissociated into hydrogen and oxygen, its main
components. This way electrical energy can be transformed into chemical energy in the form of
hydrogen. This hydrogen produced can be compressed, liquefied or mixed with metal
compounds for later storage and/or transport.
At the time you want to reverse the process, you can make use of a fuel cell to react to the
hydrogen stored with oxygen (or air) and thus transform the chemical energy of hydrogen into
electrical energy again, producing safe waste such as water vapour and heat.
If all these processes are grouped together in one piece of equipment, the object of this work is
obtained: The high temperature reversible fuel cell. A device that combines the electrolyte cell
with which hydrogen is produced, the storage system of the hydrogen, and the fuel cell to
transform the chemical energy back into electricity.
This work therefore, begins by explaining the technology of hydrogen and the types of hydrogen
production, hydrogen storage and fuel cells. It continues in the second block focusing on high
temperature equipment, and ends by reviewing the current state of reversible high temperature
systems by putting special interest in the limitations of this technology and which are the current
lines of research. | es |
