El escultor y arquitecto de retablos Luis Ortiz de Vargas (h. 1588/1590- 1649)

Abstract

Este estudio recoge la biografía y la producción retablística y escultórica de Luis Ortiz de Vargas, uno de los impulsores del pleno barroco en el campo del retablo, tanto en su estructura como en su ornamentación. Para una mayor comprensión del artista y el ambiente artístico en el que vivió, recojo al principio un capítulo introductorio del retablo sevillano en la primera mitad del siglo XVII. Luego, al ser un maestro con una trayectoria bastante itinerante, lo he dividido en varias etapas: primera etapa sevillana (h. 1616- 1618), etapa limeña (1619-1627), segunda etapa sevillana (1628-1633), etapa malagueña (1633-1638) y última etapa sevillana (1639-1649). En las cuales veremos cómo va evolucionando a la hora de trazar un retablo y su ornamentación, alabado por tantos eruditos en las artes durante su vida como tras su muerte.

This study covers the biography and the production of altarpieces and sculptural works by Luis Ortiz de Vargas, one of the instigators in the field of altarpieces, both in sculpture and ornamentation, during the high Baroque period. For a greater understanding of the artist and the artistic environment in which he lived, I introduce a chapter of contextualization of the Sevillian altarpieces from the first half of the 17th century. Afterwards, since he was a very itinerant artist, I have established several periods: first period in Seville (by 1616-1618), period in Lime (1619-1627), second period in Seville (1628-1633), period in Málaga (1633-1638) and last period in Seville (1639-1649). Within these periods, we will observe the evolution of his designs of altarpieces and ornamentations, praised by a large number of scholars in arts during and after the lifetime of the artist.
