The process of the three new sciences is nothing but Vico’s poetical thought, which evolves; not an antithesis to poetry and the poetical spirit, but poetry and the poetical spirit themselves. In this way, Vico’s poetry ... The process of the three new sciences is nothing but Vico’s poetical thought, which evolves; not an antithesis to poetry and the poetical spirit, but poetry and the poetical spirit themselves. In this way, Vico’s poetry is rarely lyric, but epic instead; words and concepts are historical, produced at the very same time they are written, spoken, conceived, or even inspired. The three “New Sciences” are the only big epic tale of Vico, as the Illiad is to Homer, the Aeneid to Virgil, The Divine Comedy to Dante and the Ars poetica to Horace. The hero is Vico himself, as he is in the Autobiography, in which “Reason” triumphs, while the “Imagination” creates in the Sciences what Reason dressed with words. Vico’s brain is divided into the realm of reason and the physical reality of Plato, Tacit, Bacon and Grocio, his “authors”, and the kingdom of imagination and poetic reality of Homer, Virgil, Horace and Dante, his “poets”. |
