The Spanish Coastal Directorate has carried out the ecological restoration of 52 hectares of salt marshes in the Algaida (Sanlucar, Spain). These marshes had disappeared due to the muddy-sandy sediment deposit coming from the dredging ofthe Guadalquivir river in the 80's. The aim ofthe restoration was to recover the biodiversity and processes of a tidal ecosystem. Design needed a mathematical tool to model the characteristics of the hydraulic regi me of the flood process, fuing the hydraulic parameters and the levels for overtoping perimetral dikes. For this purpose a transitory hydrodynamic mathematical model of the estuary has been used. lts great advantage is its future use to study other problems, like the evolution of the sedimentation rate or water quality changes. The model was use d for different hypotheses of coronation leve[ of the perimetral dikes ant the overtoping inlets. The closen solution fulfilled periodic and sufficient tidal water from the river to guarantee the necessary thresholds offlow the biological point ofview and, on the other hand, limited the speeds of the current to avoid erosions. Finally, it is noteworthy to emphasize that data collected in the monitoring program has demonstrated the reliability of the mathematical model, reaching the ecological objetives. The biodiversity, as much of the flora as ofthe fauna, is increasing very quickly, approaching the standar values ofthe rest ofthe salt marshes ofthe zone. |
