We can define the cycloid as the plane curve whose path is the one that generates a fixed point of a circle that rolls on a horizontal line without slip. We can define the cycloid as the plane curve whose path is the one that generates a fixed point of a circle that rolls on a horizontal line without slip. Taking the point of contact of the circumference with the horizontal line at an initial instant, at the beginning of the bearing we can observe that this point is describing an arc until it returns to rest on that line again. This arc will be limited in a plane area on the horizontal line in the interval [0, 2π], with r the radius of the circumference described. The first chapter will focus on this peculiar curve, explaining some of its most important characteristics and interesting properties. The second chapter we will dedicate to talk about their relatives, some of them well known although they go unnoticed. And in the last chapter we will discuss two of its most important and interesting applications. |
