Se parte de una visión de la realidad de cualquier época y lugar que genera reacciones críticas hacia ella, que genera deseos de cambio y de revolución. Este deseo de cambio puede traducirse en diferentes representaciones o modos de manifestación, no teniendo éstos por qué ser siempre materiales. La utopía es uno de ellos. Tratándose de una construcción mental, la utopía consigue ser un medio de crítica hacia el sistema imperante, proponiendo alternativas que normalmente se caracterizan por ser ideales, imaginarias e irrealizables. Muchos son los ejemplos de utopías imaginadas a lo largo de nuestro tiempo. Son objeto de este trabajo los que tienen en común este componente crítico: la base del deseo de construir o imaginar utopías viene en estos casos motivada por un descontento y un deseo de cambio, que hace que estos proyectos se forjen en torno a la crítica y quieran ser provocadores y transgresores a su tiempo. Es este el concepto de partida. Son varios los medios de manifestación de la utopía a través de las distintas épocas, partiendo de la literatura, pasando por las artes plásticas o la arquitectura. A través de la arquitectura es posible materializar estos proyectos utópicos, aunque sea de un modo simbólico, a través de maquetas, dibujos, montajes… ya que a la escala deseada o imaginada serían irrealizables. Sin embargo, estos proyectos pueden manifestarse también a través de otros medios o técnicas, como por ejemplo el cine, que es capaz de mostrarnos de una manera directa y realista estas ideas revolucionarias. Parte de la obra de Juan Sebastián Bollaín, cineasta y arquitecto, lleva a cabo esta acción de crítica y nos muestra una visión alternativa de la ciudad de Sevilla en sus películas. Se trata de un cine utópico, surrealista, provocador, que encaja con esta definición de utopía surgida a través del deseo de cambio y la crítica. Se trata, en definitiva, de proporcionar visiones diferentes de la realidad o de una hipotética realidad, de jugar con ella, de no conformarse con lo establecido y del poder de imaginar. Cómo puede plasmarse la arquitectura utópica en diferentes épocas y medios de manifestación, siendo el título Utopía y transgresión: la obra de Juan Sebastián Bollaín, resultado del estudio de la base, así como del resultado, de estos (este) proyectos utópicos.
