En su libro El Harem político, Fátima Mernissi1 argumenta que la arquitectura islámica presenta un tipo de espacio arquitectónico particular que torna nula la separación entre espacio público y espacio privado. En el caso del espacio citado por la autora se trata de la organización espacial de la mezquita con su centralidad en el agrupamiento urbano y su doble función como lugar de oración y de convivencia, donde la comunidad de creyentes podría intercambiar y discutir sus problemas. En esa ponencia pretendo introducir la idea de que esa función social se ha instituido también en el espacio domestico a partir del patio, espacio central en las habitaciones tradicionales del mundo árabe, en primer lugar, y, en segundo lugar, en las azoteas, que parecen constituirse como espacio femenino por excelencia. |
