There are many precedents of films that had a high impact on local tourism. In addition, the rise of social networks as a way of entertainment, discussion and source of information, powered by 2.0 technologies, is having great influence on many aspects of life. On July 2 2014, HBO, producer of Game of Thrones, announced that the city of Osuna (Seville) would be one of the locations where would take place fifth season shooting. The impact generated on social networks was immediate. Through this work, we aim to determine the scope and implication of this announcement on tourism in the city. In particular, we analyze the correlation between searches in Google – before and after the announcement of HBO – and the growing interest in Osuna as a tourist destination. We conclude that Google searches have been an important predictor of tourist affluences in the Osuna municipality. |
