This essay explores points of view voiced by scholars and journalists who consider the Zapatista uprising in Chiapas as contrary to indigenous claims for recognition. This group of analysts find this movement portraying a refracted image of the struggle of indigenous people for social justice, i.e. the EZLN is assumed as standing for a particular political agenda with no actual concern with indigenous problems. In sum, according to such conservative perspectives, indigenous people are still a marginal and silent collective subject who only serves to political interests of subversive organizations. |
