Este artículo pretende llevar a cabo una reflexión teórica del papel que el mercenariado griego tuvo en la Grecia clásica a nivel político, económico y militar. Tradicionalmente considerado como un residuo de las múltiples crisis del sistema de la “pólis” en el siglo IV, defendemos la tesis de que, por encima de las cuestiones económicas, los mercenarios fueron para los estados una herramienta más con la que intentar culminar sus aspiraciones políticas, es decir, hegemónicas y, por tanto, estuvieron claramente vinculados a las relaciones internacionales entre “póleis”. This paper presents some theoretical thinking on the political, economic and military roles the Greek mercenaries carried out in Classical Greece. Traditionally considered a leftover from the multiple crises of the polis system within the IV century, my view wants to emphasize some other issues on this debate. Beyond any economic considerations, there is also some evidence to believe that such mercenaries played an extra role in international politics among poleis, and particularly in the political aspirations of the states hiring them in their run towards hegemony. |
