El héroe trágico de Sófocles se define -no de manera exclusiva, pero sí fundamental- por su extremo dolor. Este motivo cristaliza en cierta serie de imágenes: para las protagonistas femeninas, la imagen recurrente del ave-que-se-queja (Ant. 423-28; El. 103-9, 147-49, 1074-77; Tr. 103-11), con la presición ocasional de ahdwn, "ruiseñor", y con referencias a las figuras míticas de Procne y Alcíone. En cuanto a los protagonistas masculinos, tanto Áyax como Edipo suscitan la imagen de toro-que-muge, con la evocación de la correspondiente figura ritual: la víctima del sacrificio (Ai. 317-26), e incluso divina: Dioniso (O.T. 477-82). En lugar de tales imágenes, los protagonistas de Filoctetes y Edipo en Colono detentan sus respectivas taras físicas como estigma de dolor: la herida, los ojos ciegos, en ambos casos realzados por la especial sonoridad de sus voces (deinon). |
