Tras una introducción de las principales teorías presentes en la obra The Golden Bough, de Sir James George Frazer (1854-1941), el autor de este artículo argumenta que la obra, a pesar de ser un libro de erudición, no obtiene su aceptación canónica por sus valores científicos o antropológicos, sino por una simbiosis de valores perfectamente conjugados. Hoy en día es evidente que los valores científicos y divulgativos de la misma carecen de una apoyatura firme, pero es precisamente la manera en que el autor usa la especulación creativa: sin una base objetiva apropiada y sin un cuaderno de campo, lo que constituye la base de la creación literaria. Esta manera de crear se sirvió también de la moda decimonónica de la instrospección psicológica y del "mentalismo", sin eludir aspectos como el uso de las bases de datos o los elementos históricos. Finalmente el estudio subraya el valor canónico de The Golden Bough, al recordar su influencia en autores como Ezra Pound, D. H. Lawrence o T. S. Eliot. |
