Este artículo intenta narrar y explicar los sucesos ocurridos en Jerez de la Frontera el año de 1637, cuando el Cabildo de la ciudad intentó resistirse a las innovaciones de la política fiscal de la Monarquía después del estallido de la guerra entre Francia y España. Para conseguir este objetivo, la primera parte resalta la crisis económica sufrida por Jerez desde finales del siglo xvi y presta una atención singular al principal proyecto de dinamización comercial de la ciudad: la construcción de un canal entre el Guadalquivir y el Guadalete, fracasado por el rechazo de la Monarquía. La segunda parte narra los acontecimientos de 1637 y propone explicar la violencia política como una consecuencia de la falta de apoyo que la ciudad había recibido del Gobierno. Este cuadro permite situar Jerez en el mapa de las convulsiones políticas que la historiografía ha detectado en la Castilla de Felipe IV. |
