The present work studies the literary, dramatic and performative qualities of Macbeth, in an attempt at establishing its singularity within the corpus of Shakespeare’s plays. This work seems to be unique as a Shakespearean drama owing, not only to its preservation as a printed text, but also to its complex literary language, its dubious stage history and the difficulties producers have to overcome in order to present it to a contemporary audience. The play’s “black legend” is thus explained and justified. |
