Helicobacter pylori, una de las pocas bacterias capaces de desarrollarse en el medio ácido existente en el estómago de los humanos, es muy conocida por los problemas estomacales que origina. Se ha observado que también pueden ser reservorios de la bacteria la saliva y la placa dental. Las poblaciones menos desarrolladas suelen ser las que tienen las tasas de infección mayores. Aquí influyen mucho los factores de riesgo como pueden ser la higiene, la situación socioeconómica de las poblaciones, la raza, la localización geográfica, etc. El tratamiento más empleado ha sido siempre la triple terapia (inhibidor de bomba de protones+claritromicina+metronidazol) aunque actualmente se está viendo que la bacteria responde mejor a la terapia cuádruple (la cual incluye otro antibiótico más, que normalmente suele ser amoxicilina y si hay alergia a la penicilina puede cambiarse por tetraciclina o doxiciclina) y genera menos resistencia, por lo que hace menos frecuente la necesidad de tratamientos de rescate. H. pylori adquiere resistencia a los antibióticos utilizados para su erradicación de forma relativamente fácil y se encuentra en aumento actualmente. Las cepas más comunes son las resistentes a claritromicina, pero también existen cepas resistentes a levofloxacino y metronidazol. En relación con esto, se ha visto que las cepas más virulentas suelen ser las menos resistentes a claritromicina. Algunos productos naturales parecen tener cierta actividad frente a la infección por la bacteria, lo que podrían considerarse tratamientos naturales aunque aún no está completamente dilucidado. Algunos de ellos son los arándanos, el própolis, el brócoli, la resina de lentisco, etc. Otro punto importante es que H. pylori tiene cierta relación con diversas patologías como pueden ser la anemia ferropénica, la púrpura trombocitopénica y otras enfermedades alérgicas como, por ejemplo, el asma, y puede tener frente a ellas un efecto tanto negativo para unas como positivo para otras. Está muy implicada en las úlceras pépticas y puede ser un factor de riesgo para generar cáncer gástrico. |
