Asco y belleza: hacia el deshielo de una relación estética

Abstract

Este trabajo se enmarca en la tendencia de la estética actual a restituir, incluso dignificar, las llamadas «emociones negativas», en especial el asco, despreciado en la tradición estética moderna por la imposibilidad de reconciliarlo con el placer y, por ende, con la belleza. Nuestro objetivo es concretamente el análisis comparativo de las dos formulaciones estéticas principales sobre el asco hasta el día de hoy, como son la de la francesa Carole Talon-Hugon y la norteamericana Carolyn Korsmeyer. Gracias a ellas, el estado afectivo de la repugnancia ha empezado a tener presencia y notoriedad en la reflexión estética —frente a su completa ausencia anterior—, acorde con las que viene ostentando en el arte contemporáneo. Este procedimiento de corte dialéctico permitirá arrojar luz sobre cada una de las posturas y demostrar que, aun tratándose de dos enfoques distintos de la misma problemática, mantienen entre ellas importantes puntos de confluencia.

This paper fits within the tendency of the current aesthetics to restore, even dignify, the so-called “negative emotions”; specifically, disgust, which has been disregarded in modern aesthetic thought due to the impossibility of reconciling it with pleasure and therefore with beauty. The objective here is a comparative analysis of the two main aesthetic formulations about disgust until today, those of the French philosopher Carole Talon-Hugon and the North American philosopher Carolyn Korsmeyer. Thanks to them, the affective state of disgust has gained attention in aesthetic reflection—as opposed to its complete previous absence—in accordance with its presence and importance in contemporary art. This dialectical procedure will shed light on each of these positions and will show that, even though they are two different approaches to the same problem, both share important points in common.
