In its beginnings, in the nineteenth century, universal exhibitions were delivered in a global discourse of progress, memory and power. These contests were mainly aimed at new discoveries around the industrialized world, although the past has always occupied a determining role in the assembly of national discourses. The object of study of this paper is the Mesoamerican artifacts of pre-Hispanic origin that were exposed throughout the second half of the nineteenth century, and their consequent use as vehicles of memory and power. Our main objective is to demonstrate how the museographic discourse mounted around the prehispanic artifacts evolved, and how they obeyed to nationalists and imperialists discourses |
