Anthropology and Social Work. Engagement with Humans, Moral Dilemmas and Theories of Difference.

Abstract

This article compares similarities between two disciplines traditionally distinguished by applying a praxis–theory dichotomy. It is argued that this equally simple and historical opposition is reducing the current multiple realities of both fields in Europe inaccurately, as both disciplines have more in common than normally appreciated. Therefore, the contribution compares the subjects ‘culture’ and ‘social problem’, showing some interesting overlaps in recent definitions. Furthermore, methodological parallels are traced in concepts such as participant observation, empathy or in-betweenness. In the third step, common roots in social theory and moral dilemmas of the past and the present for both social work and anthropology are discussed. Finally, the paper argues in favor of more collaboration, respectively, in practical training and academic research.

Este artículo compara las similitudes de dos disciplinas que se han distinguido tradicionalmente mediante la dicotomía práctica versus teoría. La contribución sostiene que esta oposicion simple e histórica no refleja adecuadamente las realidades actuales de ambas disciplínas en Europa. Por ello compara los objetos de estudio ‘cultura’ y ‘problema social’ revelando algunas coincidencias llamativas en definiciones recientes. Además, semejanzas metodológicas en conceptos como observación participante, empatía o ‘in-betweenness’ son examinadas. En un tercer paso se discuten raíces comunes en teorías sociales y dilemas morales compartidos del pasado y presente. Finalmente, el artículo aboga por una mayor colaboración en la formación profesional y la investigación académica.

Dieser Artikel vergleicht Ähnlichkeiten zweier Disziplinen, die gewöhnlich anhand einer Praxis-Theorie-Dichotomie unterschieden werden. Diese sowohl einfältige als auch veraltete Unterscheidung, so das Argument, beschreibt die gegenwärtigen Realitäten der beiden Disziplinen in Europa unzureichend, denn beide Fächer haben mehr Gemeinsames als gewöhnlich angenommen wird. Der Beitrag beleuchtet dafür die jeweiligen Forschungsgegenstände ‘Kultur’ und ‘Soziale Probleme’ und untersucht Überschneidungen in neueren Definitionen. Darüber hinaus werden methodologische Parallelen in den Konzepten der teilnehmenden Beobachtung, der Empathie oder der ‘in-betweenness’ erörtert. Danach blickt der Text auf verbindende Wurzeln in Sozialtheorien und Ähnlichkeiten in den moralischen Dilemmata, in denen sich Ethnologie und Soziale Arbeit in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart befinden. Abschlieβend plädiert der Artikel für eine intensivere Zusammenarbeit sowohl in der Praxisausbildung als auch in der akademischen Forschung.
