Define implantación como el procedimiento quirúrgico destinado a insertar o introducir un tejido, un órgano o un material, denominado implante, en los tejidos de la cavidad oral. La finalidad del mismo es la rehabilitación protésica tras la pérdida del diente. (1) La implantología dental es la rama de la odontología, que se dedica a la inserción de un material aloplástico (ajeno al organismo humano) en el maxilar o mandíbula, que se aloja en el tejido óseo o por debajo del periostio con el objetivo de crear elementos de soporte y sujeción, que permitan reponer los dientes ausentes. (2) Este procedimiento tiene origen en la rehabilitación de pacientes totalmente desdentados, aunque en la actualidad también se usa para rehabilitar pacientes parcialmente desdentados o ausencias unitarias. La osteointegración del implante no es el único objetivo, también se busca una correcta solución estética, tanto del tejido blando (periodonto), la prótesis que lo rehabilita, como una correcta funcionalidad, intentando comportarse lo máximo posible a un diente natural. La búsqueda de una cirugía lo menos invasiva posible, un postoperatorio llevadero y sin complicaciones, y disminuir el tiempo del tratamiento es lo que tiene en continua formación e investigación a todos los especialistas clínicos e investigadores en este campo. Los implantes en la actualidad suelen ser roscados, aunque no han sido así siempre. Los mismos están hechos de materiales biocompatibles que no producen rechazo y permiten la unión al hueso (osteointegración), y además su superficie puede presentar diferentes texturas y recubrimientos en la búsqueda de mejorar la adhesión al hueso debido a que posee mayor superficie. Todo ello busca la formación de hueso en el menor tiempo posible, pues gracias a ello y al conocimiento de la cicatrización ósea, manejamos el concepto de estabilidad primaria, que quizás sea lo más importante a la hora de hablar de una correcta osteointegración. |
