The port and the city are entities in need of a “pact of coexistence” that would be mutally beneficial. Port cities have specific characteristics that must be preserved and enhanced as they are part of its millennium-old culture. They are not only and economic engine, they also create its particular landscape. It is a widespread trend that the innermost docks of ports become open areas, linked to the urban fabric as maritime or river fronts, since the current nautical activities cause an increase in scale of boths ships and land facilities. This creates a need for new piers, increasingly broader and technological advanced spaces, that alow the development of industrial port activities and shipping vessels, but also cruise ships and pleasure boats. To carry out this research proiect, based on proposals for a port-city coexistence, we studied its application on specific cases: the Port of Seville and the Port of Malaga, which were developed based on Project exercises, in which various professors and students of the School of Architecture of Seville have been involved. |
