This doctoral thesis focuses on flamenco as a cultural practice and aims to explore how a ‘flamenco identity’ is constructed in the television programme Rito y Geografía del Cante. This work includes an analysis of the possible influence of both mairenismo and the political context of the programme. This study has used qualitative research methods such as semi-structured interviews and content analysis. Triandis (2002) model of subjective culture and Fernández & Basabe (2010) culture components theory have been applied to analyse the ‘flamenco identity’ and to identify explicit references to flamenco norms, beliefs, symbols, values and roles. This study concludes that as a cultural practice, flamenco presents elements that can be explained using Triandis (2002) model of subjective culture and that these can be identified in the programme Rito y Geografia del Cante. |
