The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether we can significantly extend the acceptance of a digital social currency (issued by the city council), as a means of compensation for citizen participation (vote). We call this virtual social currency generically, Votecoin The methodology used is the statistical analysis of a sample of 533 participants in March 2017. The results validated the main hypothesis of this research. Additionally, we find that the adoption of this social currency increases significantly if it can be used as a means of payment in local commerce, or for the direct discount of rates and taxes. On the contrary, its adoption decreases if there is no clear long-term support from the city council, supporting the growth of the volume of transactions using this complementary currency.Social currencies foster local employment (Groppa, 2013) and generate trust and social capital (Michel and Hudon, 2015), but it needs a minimum adoption threshold in order to consolidate (Seyfang and Longhurst, 2013), this is the challenge which addresses the present work. We also carry out a qualitative evaluation of the feasibility of its implementation in the municipality of Seville, according to the theory of change. This methodology can be useful for its extension to other municipalities. |
