The methodology known as case study is one of the most widely used research methods in the field of Applied Linguistics, especially in the study of bilingual children. That is the reason why the aforementioned method was used to study the language attitude of the bilingual and bicultural child on which this project focuses. Although most ethnographic case studies are usually conducted over comparatively long periods of time, the present case study is a quasi-ethnographic one, since it was carried out over a three-month period. In the first part of this paper, a theoretical framework about basic characteristics of family bilingualism, along with the concepts of biculturalism and language attitude, are provided in order to offer a broader comprehension of the project’s organization. Moreover, these three concepts are the main topics discussed in this project. In the second part, the case study is described, and both the analysis of the results obtained and the conclusions drawn from it are presented. The results show that the girl normally displays a positive attitude towards the use of either Spanish or English if the language context she takes part in includes native speakers of either language. Moreover, the cultural identity she identifies the most with, at a given point, is usually the one of the people she’s interacting with. |
