Rem at both sides of the mirror

Abstract

“Rem at both sides of the mirror” is framed on a research an investigation on architectural media, its influence in the architectural production and vice versa. We try to discern if communication and architectural production collide and converge, if the message and the means used acquire the same qualities. The “communication in architecture is understood, not only as the ultimate expression of the architectural act, but also as an agent integrates in all the phases of the creative process, from the very beginning. With this intention, the research focuses on one of the most relevant examples of its development, which is Rem Koolhaas. Through his figure, the thesis addresses the evolution of his communicative dimension and the successive transformations in the field of architectural communication, in parallel to his conceptual evolution along his career. The research makes a comparison between his most relevant publications, starting with “Delirious New York” (Oxford University Press, 1978) and “SMLXL” (Ed. Taschen, 2004). Next, I focus on “Content” (Ed. Taschen, 2004), raising three hypotheses: the existence of a convergence between the visual and conceptual language, the application of a language based on a communicative congestion and the consequent maximum transformation of the codes of communication in architecture. In short, the thesis puts in value the role of communication architecture in the creative process.

“Rem a los dos lados del espejo” se enmarca en una investigación sobre los medios de comunicación de arquitectura, su reflejo en la producción arquitectónica y viceversa. Se trata de llegar a discernir si comunicación y producción arquitectónica colisionan y confluyen, si el mensaje y el medio transmisor adquieren las mismas cualidades. Se entiende la comunicación en arquitectura, no solamente como la expresión última del hecho arquitectónico, sino como un agente que se integra en todas las fases del proceso creativo, desde el inicio. Para ello, la investigación se centra en uno de los máximos exponentes de su evolución, como es Rem Koolhaas. A través de su figura, la tesis aborda la evolución de su faceta comunicativa y las transformaciones sucesivas en el campo de la comunicación arquitectónica, en paralelo a su evolución conceptual a lo largo de su trayectoria. La investigación realiza una comparativa entre sus publicaciones más relevantes, comenzando con “Delirious New York” (Oxford University Press, 1978) y “SMLXL” (Ed. Taschen, 2004). A continuación, se centra en “Content”, planteando tres hipótesis: la existencia una convergencia entre el lenguaje visual y proyectual, la aplicación de lenguaje basado en una congestión comunicativa máxima y la consecuente transformación de los códigos de la comunicación en la arquitectura. En definitiva, la investigación trata de poner en valor el papel de la comunicación arquitectónica en el proceso creativo.
