Durante su período de invernada en encinares de Sierra Morena (Octubre-Febrero), la dieta del petirrojo (Erithacus rubecula) consiste básicamenre en bellota y hormigas obreras. El porcentaje de bellota por estómago (volumen) oscila entre 16.5 % (Octubre) y 78.4 % (Diciembre), mientras que las hormigas constituyen entre 51 % (Febrero) y 87 % (Noviembre) de todas las presas animales ingeridas. El elevado consumo de hormigas, un tipo de presa generalmente evitado por los pájaros insectívoros, está probablemente relacionado con la escasez invernal de otros artrópodos en el suelo del encinar. La bellota ingerida procede en gran medida del aprovechamiento de los residuos dejados por especies "facilitadoras" de aves que poseen estructuras tróficas capaces de romper la cubierta. Sitta europaea y Parus major parecen ser las dos especies (acilitadoras más importantes. El estudio cuantitativo del comportamiento alimenticio del petirrojo revela una evolución invernal en la importancia relativa de los dos métodos principales usados, caza "al acecho" y "caminando". El último de ellos es empleado sobre rodo en Diciembre y Enero, asociado a un mayor consumo de piedrecillas durante esa época, explicable por la necesidad de contar con gastrolitos que ayuden a digerir la elevada fracción de la dieta que en esos meses constituyen la bellota. A lo largo del invierno, el peso corporal de los petirrojos aumenta contínuamente, debido al progresivo incremento en sus reservas de grasa subcutánea. La ingestión de bellota es directamente responsable del aumento en acumulación grasa, existiendo una elevada correlación entre el peso de los individuos y el porcentaje de bellota contenido en su estómago. La acumulación de grasa de los petirrojos cuyo estómago contenía bellota es significativamente superior a la mostrada por aquéllos que no habían ingerido esta materia vegetal. En contraste con estos hechos, los petirrojos que invernan en zonas cultivadas y marginales del valle del Guadalquivir y cuya ingestión de materia vegetal se limita a frutos carnosos, no experimentan un engorde tan acusado. En esta población, la presencia de frutos en el estómago no sólo no favorece el aumento de peso, sino que la correlación entre peso y porcentaje de fruto en estómago es de signo ne-gativo. Esta diferencia entre poblaciones es explicable por el valor nutritivo mucho más elevado en la bellota que en los frutos carnosos. Los resultados obtenidos revelan la existencia de un conjunto de relaciones complejas entre comportamiento de búsqueda, tipo de alimento ingerido, estado fisiológico resultante y actividades de las especies facilitadoras. Todos estos aspectos están últimamente relacionados con la cantidad y calidad del alimento disponible. La persistencia del petirrojo en el encinar a lo largo del invierno parece depender a la vez de su gran plasticidad comportamental y de la existencia de especies facilitadoras que le hacen accesible un alimento de reemplazamiento en las épocas centrales del invierno cuando las presas animales escasean. |
