Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the existing differences between the esthetic smile criteria established in dentistry and celebrities’ smile characteristics whose smiles are considered to be beautiful by lay people. Materials and Methods: An internet search for “celebrities best smile ranking”. Another search for images of these celebrities, which must show entire face with an open smile. These images were analyzed using Photoshop software for different esthetic smile criteria. Results: The most common features found in the studied variables are: average upper lip position (70.7%), being the incisal edges parallel to lower lip in half the sample (56.1%), lower lip not touching the incisal edges of the maxillary teeth (48.8%), the smile amplitude 10 teeth (53.7%), with the dental midline centered with the philtrum (80.5%), facial and teeth midline (51.2%), and normal oral corridors (78%). Conclusion: the celebrities voted to have the most beautiful smiles by lay people showed most of smile esthetic criteria, but there are some features in some of them which are considered unsightly. This suggests that the perception of the general population is also influenced by other factors outside the smile itself. |
