Aspectos arquitectónicos de las Atarazanas de Sevilla. Permanencia y transformación

Abstract

Los edificios van más allá que sus ideadores y constructores, y una vez salidos de sus manos alcanzan vida propia. Cuando los principios formales que le dieron calidad de organismo son suficientemente sólidos, siguen manteniéndose a lo largo de sus devenires temporales, de manera que se erigen como hilo conductor de su historia y constante fuente de identidad. Este trabajo elige un monumento, las Reales Atarazanas de Sevilla, arquitectura ejemplar y modélica. Se estudia, se investiga y se analiza, cómo cada uno de los diferentes ingredientes que intervienen en la arquitectura, en su concepción, en su construcción y en su uso, pueden ser contados desde una aplicación concreta si ésta es ‘ejemplar’. Y más aún cuando este modelo, ha tenido la capacidad de absorber en él arquitecturas ‘modélicas’ a su vez, planteadas en los diferentes tiempos en los que se han producido estas mutaciones arquitectónicas sobre la base originariamente construida. Es nuestro propósito exponer aquellos argumentos que transmitan como el mismo recinto que alojó una edificación gótico-mudéjar para astilleros, con su misma traza, sus mismas dimensiones, y con los mismos elementos materiales, aloja una basílica renacentista, una iglesia y hospicio barrocos, una Maestranza neoclásica, y todo ello logrado mediante operaciones de transformación que han descubierto y mantenido la ‘taxis’ interna de la arquitectura original. Y obtener claves de intervención que permitan, una vez más, adecuarlo idóneamente a otro uso sin que el edificio deje de ser fundamentalmente el mismo.

Buildings go beyond their authors and builders, and once they have left their hands attain a life of their own. Nevertheless, when the principles of a layout give rise to a body sufficiently solid, they are preserved throughout evolutions over time so that they constitute a connecting thread through its history and a constant idntifying source. The study herein has chosen a monument, the Royal Shipyards in Seville, an exemplary building. A study and analysis is made of how each of the different ingredients that participate in its architecture, its design, construction and use, can be explained from the standpoint of a specific application when it is exemplary. Even more so when this model has the ability to absorb “model” architecture in its own right, presented at different times when architectural mutations have occurred on the original building.It is our intention, to clearly expound the reasoning that transmits how the very same enclosure that could house a gothic mudejar building for a shipyard, could as well, with the same layout, dimensions and materials, house a Renaissance basilica, a church, a baroque hospice, neoclassic military workshops and succeed in doing so through transformations that discover and maintain the internal organization of the original architecture. And thereby obtain the keys to action which will allow, once more, to adapt it best to another use without the building ceasing to be basically the same.
