La ciudad y las tangencias: acercamiento al entorno de la Estación de San Bernardo

Abstract

El ferrocarril desde su origen ha sido un instrumento de transformación urbana y territorial. Es decisivo en la formación de la ciudad contemporánea. El ferrocarril es algo más que un elemento de transformación física de la ciudad y su entorno. Desde su aparición es un símbolo de la modernidad, representa la dualidad hombre-máquina, la idea de incertidumbre ante un futuro de cambios rápidos. El progreso se manifiesta en el ferrocarril más que en ningún otro elemento de la cultura contemporánea, altera para siempre la percepción de los tiempos y los espacios de la ciudad. El ferrocarril representa lo positivo y lo negativo que el progreso aporta al hombre. Este juego de dualidades en distintos grados hace que éste se pueda entender como un elemento de tangencia más allá del concepto físico que ésta define. En este artículo, se establece un recorrido por los elementos, que de alguna manera determinan que ha supuesto y supone el ferrocarril para la ciudad de Sevilla, desde el punto de vista del que va a actuar sobre ella. Este análisis aborda la Estación de San Bernardo y su entorno. Usando el concepto de tangencia como argumento que nos traslada desde el análisis historiográfico hacia los inseguros caminos del proyecto de arquitectura.

Since its origin the railroad has been an instrument of urban and territorial development. It was essential in the formation of the contemporary city. The railroad was something more than an element of physical transformation of the city and its environment. Since its appearance, not only has it been a symbol of modernity, but it also has represented the man-machine duality, and the idea of uncertainty before a future of rapid changes. Progress is demonstrated in the railroad more than in any other element of the contemporary culture, altering forever the perception of the times and the spaces of the city. The railroad represents the positive and the negative aspects that progress contributes to man. This game of dualities in different degrees has made it possible to understand the railroad as an element of tangency beyond the fisical concept that it defines. This article establishes an itinerary over the elements that show how the railroad affects the city of Seville, from the point of view of someone who has to act over this reality. This research deal with the San Bernardo Station, its neighbourhood and outskirts. The concept of tangency is used as an argument to move ourselves from the historical analysis to the insecure pathway of the architectural project.
