Desde la proclamación de Isabel II como reina de España en 1833 hasta su expulsión del territorio nacional en 1868, la corona española tuvo numerosos pretendientes . En primer lugar, el infante don Carlos, tío paterno de la reina-niña, que encabezó una facción monárquica opuesta al liberalismo triunfante desde la década de los treinta. Y, en segundo lugar, los diferentes aspirantes a su mano. Pero, sin duda, uno de los más destacados y pertinaces pretendientes a la corona fue su cuñado don Antonio de Orleans, duque de Montpensier. Don Antonio entró a formar parte de la historia de España a través de su matrimonio con doña María Luisa Fernanda de Borbón y Borbón Dos Sicilias, princesa de Asturias . El enlace real se celebró en Madrid el 1O de octubre de 1846 y fue una doble boda real, ya que junto con don Antonio y doña Luisa Fernanda contrajeron matrimonio la reina Isabel II y su primo don Francisco de Asís, duque de Sevilla. Los matrimonios reales no se hicieron por amor, pues los intereses políticos , personales y de terceros países fueron los que determinaron los destinos de España y de las jóvenes princesas. |
