James, G.S. Hall y G.T. Ladd. Ladd have been considered as pioneers of American functionalism. Both, James and Hall, have usually received extensive attention on traditional psychology handbooks, but Ladd has only briefly been cited on them. However, we can consider that during the first years of American Psychology, Ladd’s work had an important influence in the subsequent development of functionalism, mainly through his book Elements of Psychological Psychology (1887). In the present work, we emphasize Ladd’s position with respect to some of the main problems of Psychology at the end of the XIX century as well as its relationship with statistic and experimentalism, its relation with Philosophy and its possible applications to the practical welfare mankind. |
