In recent years, technological advances have made possible to have large masses of data that sometimes correspond to observations of a random phenomenon over a continuous range, that is, functions. The work will deal with the theory and the practice of statistical methods for situations where the available data are functions (instead of numbers or vectors). Chapters 1 and 2 are introductory, consisting of definitions and results that will help us to elaborate this memory. In order to develop the techniques in this piece of work, it will be required the functions to have certain properties. Specifically, it will be assumed that they belong to a Hilbert space. Therefore, in Chapter 1, we will present some properties of these spaces, focusing on the space L2, while in Chapter 2 we introduce some statistical concepts for functions. One of them is the covariance operator, which will be crucial for further developments. In Chapter 3 we estimate the mean function, the covariance function and the covariance operator, and study some properties of such estimators. Sometimes we need to work with the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the covariance operator, so in Chapter 4 we will estimate them and study some properties of the estimators, including the asymptotic normality. In Chapter 5 we will introduce the concept of functional principal components, that allow us to reduce the dimension of infinitely dimensional functional data to a small finite dimension in an optimal way. In Chapter 6 we will focus on two tests for: The equality of mean functions: we will study two methods, proving theorems giving the asymptotic null distribution of the corresponding test statistics and their convergence in probability under alternatives. The equality of covariance operators: we will also study the asymptotic null distribution of the test statistic.
